My Hair…

My hair
Is happily
Nappy
Coiled crinkly
Goodness
Unconventional
Intensity

My hair
Is phenomenal
A representation
Of my eloquent
Melaninated
Thick thighed
Heavy lipped
Self

My hair is
A reflection
Of stars caught in
A blanket
Of night
My heritage
Quilt of colorful
Strength

My hair
Is the roots
That are dug
In me

My crown
That I
Carry
Loud and

Proud.

Jenifer Lewis: Rediscovering My Beautiful Nappy Hair

“I had surgery on my right arm – I couldn’t reach up to comb my hair so i just cut it off — only to re-discover my beautiful nappy hair.” ~ Jenifer Lewis

I don’t understand when people say “natural aint for everybody” when being natural is just accepting what you were born with. You were born with natural hair. In the 70’s it was the era of the Afro and the Puff. It just disturbs me to hear how closed off some people are to their own hair. I have been natural on and off since high school, and i have to say i feel more at ease being natural. I love my hair but most importantly i know and love myself. And this beautiful lady above just proves that beauty can come in any form and texture. Just my opinion on this issue that has become so controverstial. Love you Jenifer Lewis!! Enjoy the Tea.
